Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this course you should be able to:
• Describe what it means to be an evidence-based clinician
• Apply that knowledge to the rehabilitation of people following stroke or traumatic brain injury
• Understand the biomechanics of sitting and standing balance, standing-up, and sitting-down and walking
• Analyse movement problems and skills involving the lower limbs, taking into account neural, biomechanical, musculoskeletal and environmental factors
• Distinguish between compensations and missing essential components
• Plan and implement appropriate training strategies for the identified movement problems.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of chosen training strategies
• Modify training strategies in response to changes in the learner’s performance
• Critically evaluate and modify teaching skills to optimise practise and training
Target audience:
The workshop will be of interest to physiotherapists from hospital and community-based settings, as well as private clinics, who teach adults following stroke and acquired brain impairment, as well as university lecturers. The workshop focuses on retraining of limb skills.
Practical work with patients:
People with stroke (or ABI) will be invited to participate in the clinical training sessions.
Relatives or carers who can assist with training are also encouraged to attend.
Types of stroke survivors:
The aim is to involve a variety of stroke survivors, i.e. people with very little lower limb movement (eg who are unable to sit) as well as those with more advanced lower limb recovery (eg those who can walk or have difficulty ascending or descending stairs). Please note – the workshop can include people with other acquired brain injury as well as stroke survivors.
Day 1: Two stroke survivors to attend for approximately 1 hour in the afternoon to be assessed and trained by the presenter/s.
Days 2 and 3: The people with stroke attend for 2 hours on the second and third afternoons (this includes the two stroke survivors who attended on Day 1). The groups of 3 physiotherapists will assess, analyse and train each stroke survivor. They will establish a homework program for the ward or home. Stroke survivors will be asked to complete practice overnight and their performance and goals reviewed the following day.
Pre-reading/homework:
will be available from the StrokeEd website.
Therapists are asked to start preparing 4 weeks before the event. Allow several hours for the homework.
Pre-reading includes a book chapter and some analysis tasks.
Slides/ Workshop manual:
Workshop manual (up to 180 pages) including the Powerpoint slides and worksheets.
A PDF file is made available to the participants as a link provided for electronic download by individual therapists to save and use on their i-pad/tablet/computer or to print out (by them selves). Bring your own computer if you don’t use a printed copy.
